Tim takes on a mammoth Ultraman Challenge for a cause close to his heart

This May, Tim Belstead is set to face the Ultraman in Noosa, one of the toughest endurance events around, to support a cause very close to his heart. Tim is the cousin of the late Alex Gadomski, who tragically passed away at just 21 years of age after battling the Bone Marrow Failure Syndrome, Aplastic Anaemia and Myelodysplasia. Tim is taking on the Ultraman challenge to honour Alex’s memory and continue raising awareness and funds for the devastating condition that took his life.

Tim and Alex were born just a year apart and shared a deep bond, “Alex was my first friend,” Tim says. The loss of his cousin has fuelled Tim’s dedication to raising awareness and funds for the Alex Gadomski Fellowship, which advances research and vital support services for patients and families living with Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes in Tasmania.

Over the years, Tim, along with Alex’s brother Jordan and Lachlan Gadomski and a group of committed friends have dreamed up daring and challenging events to rally support for the cause. Their journey began in 2020 with a relay run over 300km long called The Bloody Long Run, where they raised an incredible $40,000! They followed this with The Bloody Long Triathlon the following year, and in 2023, they invented the brutal Quadrathlon – a 60km kayak, 10km swim, 500km bike ride, and 84km run – raising a phenomenal $100,000 in total!

This year, Tim is stepping up to the plate once more to tackle the Ultraman event, a solo multi-day endurance competition which will take place in Noosa this May. Day 1 includes a 10km swim followed by a 140km bike ride, Day 2 features an exhausting 281km bike ride, and Day 3 will test Tim’s endurance with a gruelling DOUBLE marathon – 84km in total!

Despite battling injuries during his training, Tim’s determination to succeed is unwavering. “Whenever I’m struggling during these challenges, I always draw strength from Alex, because what I’m enduring is nothing compared to what he went through,” Tim explains.

Tim’s goal for the Ultraman is to raise $5 for every kilometre of the challenge, aiming to continue raising awareness for Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes and funding critical research to improve treatments and work towards a cure.

Through these extraordinary challenges, Tim has become a true champion for a cause, continually pushing his physical and mental limits to inspire others and help create a brighter future for patients and their families. With the Ultraman event fast approaching, Tim is ready to tackle this monumental challenge head-on, with Alex’s memory and the fight against Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes driving him every step of the way.
