Professor Jeff Szer

Jeff Szer was the foundation Professor/Director of the Department of Clinical Haematology & Bone Marrow Transplant Service at Royal Melbourne Hospital until August 2016, when the department became a part of the Clinical Haematology Department at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre & The Royal Melbourne Hospital. He was the foundation Group lead for Classical Haematology including rare haematologic disorders and bone marrow failure syndromes and is an active PI in the Classical Haematology and Allogeneic BMT spaces.

Jeff established the first adult bone marrow transplant centre in Melbourne in 1984 and has clinical research interests in all areas of transplantation and the non-malignant conditions of Gaucher disease and paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria for which he is an active clinical trialist. He has been an active PI in PNH studies since 2004 and was the chair of the International PNH Registry Committee as well as currently chairing and coordinating the IPIG PNH Registry. He is a member of the Guidelines writing committee of IPIG.

He sits on several national and international committees and organisations involved in haematology. He is a past President of the World Marrow Donor Association and the Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation as well as having been the founder and Initial President of the Bone Marrow Transplant Society of Australia and New Zealand (now ANZTCT). He has authored over 450 papers in peer-reviewed journals and is the Emeritus Editor-in-Chief of the Internal Medicine Journal. He is on the Editorial Boards of several other international journals including Blood Reviews, BMC Haematology, Blood Cell Therapy,  Bone Marrow Transplantation and Frontiers.
