2024 CRE Expert Webinar Series on Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes – Expert Webinar 4
In vitro haematopoietic stem cell generation technology
On Monday 24th February, 2025, The Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision Centre of Research Excellence in Bone Marrow Biology, along with our exclusive sponsor Novartis, was proud to present the fourth Expert Webinar for our scientific community featuring guest speaker, Associate Professor Elizabeth Ng.
Associate Professor Elizabeth Ng is a Group Leader in the Blood Development Laboratory at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI), Melbourne, Victoria. A major focus of her work is to generate transplantable haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from human pluripotent stem cells for tissue repair and regeneration, disease modelling and the testing of therapeutic products. Elizabeth will present on “iHSCs: haematopoietic stem cells generated from induced pluripotent stem cells – a potential autologous cell therapy for bone marrow failure syndromes.”

2024 Patient and Family Educational Session – Gene editing for inherited Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes
Maddie’s Vision was proud to present this Patient and Family Educational Session on Wednesday 18 September featuring the following gene editing experts:
Associate Professor Andrew Deans, St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research.
Dr Lorna McLeman, Royal Children’s Hospital and St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research.
Their presentations provided an overview of innovative gene editing technologies and the research currently being undertaken in Australia via ‘PAGETURNA’ (Pioneering Application of Gene Editing to Transplant Using RNA) to develop new gene therapies to correct disease-causing mutations in blood stem cells.

The Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision Centre of Research Excellence in Bone Marrow Biology, along with our exclusive sponsor Novartis, was proud to present the second CRE Expert Webinar on Thursday July 25 featuring international guest speaker, Professor Alan Warren.
Alan is Professor of Haematology at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. His presentation discussed how new technologies are providing insights into the molecular basis of the ribosomopathy Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS), including addressing the following questions:
How does a germline ribosome assembly defect associated with impaired stem cell fitness drive evolution to blood cancer?
Can we harness these insights to improve risk stratification and develop personalised medicine approaches in SDS and inherited marrow failure disorders more generally?
